I will briefly explain terms related to integrated circuits such as microcomputers, LSIs, and ASICs etc.

■IC (Integrated Circuit)

A general term for circuits that integrate electronic components such as semiconductors. All of the microcontroller and ASICs described below are also included in the integrated circuit.

■LSI (Large Scale Integration)

A larger IC is called an LSI. It seems that it is called LSI when the number of elements is 1000 or more.

■Micro controller

An integrated circuit that has a CPU (Central Processing Unit) with an arithmetic function and a circuit such as a memory. Therefore, the microcomputer is also an IC / LSI in a broad sense.

■GPU (Graphics Processing Unit)

It is an integrated circuit that specializes in image processing, repeated routine operations, and parallel operations. In recent years, it has been used not only for image processing but also for deep learning operations. The CPU is good at complicated processing and plays the central role of the microcontroller, while the GPU is dedicated to performing specific processing.

■ASIC(Application Specific Integrated Circuit)

As the name implies, it is an IC made for a specific purpose. It's called ASIC. GA (Gate Array) is one of the ASIC design and manufacturing methods. There is a general-purpose IC as a pair with ASIC.

■FPGA(Field-Programmable Gate Array)

An integrated circuit whose configuration can be set after manufacturing, and a self-programmable gate array. It is similar to ASIC in that it is an IC suitable for the purpose, but the difference from ASIC is that FPGA uses flash ROM, so it is possible to program the contents by yourself after purchase. The ASIC uses a mask ROM, and the contents cannot be remade after purchase.
